Scooter Safety: Honda Ruckus R6 Tail Lights

Safety is a factor in riding any bike, but especially while riding the Honda Ruckus. One of the Ruckus parts that makes a huge safety and style impact are the tail lights. Today, we’ll discuss the R6 Ruckus tail light options and go over their differences and advantages they have.

The most popular Ruckus tail light swap is the Yamaha R6 Tail Light from the 2003-2005 model years. The flat top makes it easy to mount anywhere on the rear of the Ruckus, but most Ruckus riders place theirs under the seat. It is where most kits are designed to place the mount as well as the plastic seat bottom is easy to modify for use. There are several different versions of the R6 tail light that people use, but most opt for the LED version with integrated turn signals or the LED version with integrated and sequential turn signals.

DROWSports sells both LED versions of the R6 tail light. They are called the R6 Economy for the non-sequential and the R6 Sequential for the sequential version. Despite its name, the R6 Economy comes with everything you need to install it on to your Honda Ruckus or any bike that can use it. Both kits come with a polished and anodized bracket that has been laser cut, hardware that allows it to be mounted under the seat, and the electrical parts needed to make both lights work with your bike. The bracket is mounted under the seat using self-tapping screws and the tail light is secured by a pair of bolts, nuts, lock washers, and one self-tapping screw for the bracket on the R6 light that is between the lights. This must be used as vibrations from your bike can cause the light to fail or break if not.

The difference, however, is how the lights light up and how the resistors are done for the turn signals. The R6 Economy is a steady on brake light with turn signals that are integrated into the light. The turn signals flash as a solid light. The resistors for the turn signals need to be wired in, but are included in the kit along with 4 strips of wire to ease installation of the resistors and need to be soldered to them. The resistors must also be wired in parallel, electrically, to the turn signals or the flasher relay. What is meant by parallel is that positive and negative are shared between the resistors and the load (the lights or the relay).

The R6 Sequential has a “Stop Alert” brake light, which flashes briefly before going steady on. This alerts riders and driver behind you that you are slowing or coming to a stop. The integrated turn signals also flash in a sequential pattern from the center of the light to the outside of the light in the direction you are indicating you are turning. While that is not a safety feature, it is a very interesting and unique one. Both of these functions can also be turned off and the light will act just like a non-sequential light. The sequential R6 also features a resistor pack that is pre-wired for the light; however it does still require some wiring.
