Larrys GET Big Bore Ruckus

The Forgotten Build

Every Ruckus build has a story to behind it, but unfortunately, this one never had the opportunity,  This build started about two years before we open DROW’s (2008).  Being one of our first builds, we didn’t have a set plan on how we wanted the bike to turn out; our number one goal was we wanted to be the fastest GET Ruckus around.  With the help of our friend Mike Kojima, we set out to build the crazy GET motor we can.  At the time there weren’t too many fast Ruckus, and GY6 Swap Ruckus wasn’t as refined as it is now.  Most swaps stayed 150cc, and there was some 180cc maybe some 190cc.  Top speed was only maybe around 70 mph for the fast guys.  Mike, has already built a fast GET motor for his person Ruckus and now wanted to upgrade version of that motor build.  The goal was to top out at 58-60 mph.

Disassembly

Here is one of the few pictures we have of the Ruckus before we started the build.  Having a Yoshimura Carbon TRC Exhaust, lowered seat frame and mountain bike/BMX handlebars were cool.

Tear down and prep for paint.  Marking and removing every unwanted tab before you drop it off at the paint shop is important. You don’t want to have to grind or make modification after the part is painted.  Also making a list of what you needed paint, powder coated and polish is a good idea.

Engine Work

We wanted the Ruckus to stand out, especially the motor, so we completely polished it.

At the time we spent most of our budget on paint and polishing the motor all the other parts like the wheels, front disc brakes will be added later.

Bottom End Work

Variator tuning is very critical on the 50cc Ruckus GET Motor.  To get the most out of the CVT, you will need to try out different weights, different belts and tune to your riding needs.   It’s not uncommon to try out 2-3 different belts brands, 3-4 roller weight size before getting the right setup that works for you.   Adding a longer final drive like the OEM Honda Met Gears will require you to do the tuning all over.  Our Ruckus Dr. Pulley Hit Clutch kit was added to help with off the line take off and help keep the clutch from slipping at high speed.

Carburetor Setup

At the time we were one of the first to use the Keihin PE20 carburetor on a 50cc Ruckus GET motor.  The polish crankcase looks pretty good with Posh Ignition Coil, PWJDM Extension Kit.

Password JDM offers a clean stretch kit about 6.5″ longer than stock. You can also see the relocation of PCV valve next to the fuel pump.

Coolant Reservoir Setup

We double the PWJDM Chin Bone Brace as a coolant overflow reservoir.   Not too many people will notice little details like this.

Handlebar Setup

DRS_8530

I always like the look of the Mountain Bike handlebar setup with a BMX stem.  Using a BMX bike stem will require one of our DROWsports BMX Stem Stem.  BMX/Mountain bar setup is very light and offers good riding position which can help prevent rider fatigue.  Brembo master cylinder paired with Gold Brembo P32 caliper will help slow down this big bore Ruckus.  You may have noticed the Ruckus is now Yellow.

Front End Fork Setup

These were the first set of RRGS Ruckus Lowdown in the USA back in 2009-2010. The gold matches our color scheme pretty well.  Don’t forget the DROWsports titanium wheel spacer with a laser etched logo.

The build was completed in 2011 and this was the final product.  Unfortanly, we blew the big bore motor by overheating during SuperSunday 2011.  It wasn’t a good idea holding the throttle wide open trying to chase down GY6 swaps in the canyons even after the head gasket blew.  Some of the details we may have missed are  10″ RPM Ruckus Wheels, which has been discontinued. Yoshimura Carbon TRC was also chopped about 1″.

Too bad RPM discontinued this rear wheel.

Check out the polish/powder coated factory triple tree.  We also powder coated the seat hanger strap.
